Body-Solid Pro Clubline Counter-Balanced Smith Machine (SCB1000B)

The SCB1000B is a full commercial Smith machine. The bar rides on case hardened steel rods and club quality bearings, and a counterbalance system carries most of the bar's own weight, so starting resistance is about 6 lb. The machine is rated to 1,000 lb. and stores six Olympic plates on built in posts.

Intended use: Full Commercial

Why does a 6 lb. starting bar matter?

Because it lets one station serve your entire floor. A standard Smith bar starts somewhere around 15 to 30 lb. before anyone loads a plate. For a new member, a rehab client, or a first time overhead press, that is a real wall.

The counterbalance system on the SCB1000B brings the bar down to roughly 6 lb. of starting resistance. A beginner can learn the press pattern with almost nothing on the bar. A strong lifter still gets a 1,000 lb. ceiling on the same machine. That spread is why this model turns up in university weight rooms and hotel fitness centers as often as it does in commercial clubs.

How is the SCB1000B built?

The mainframe is oval 11 gauge steel. Oval tubing resists twisting better than round tubing of the same wall thickness, which is what keeps both uprights parallel through years of loaded squats.

The carriage runs on case hardened guide rods with club quality bearings rather than bushings. Bushings wear and go sticky. Bearings keep the bar quiet and smooth at the top of a heavy set, which is the exact moment a sticky carriage becomes a problem.

Body-Solid calls the travel a reverse pitch design with a vertical carriage. The counterbalance weights sit behind gunmetal gray shields, so nothing moving is exposed at head height.

See the carriage in motion

This is Body-Solid's own walkthrough of the SCB1000B. Watching the carriage move tells you more about a Smith machine than any spec row can, so it is worth a minute before you commit the floor space.

Who is the SCB1000B for?

Gyms and health clubs, university and school weight rooms, police and fire training rooms, and team facilities that need a self spotting bar station running all day. It also fits a serious home gym, as long as the room can take an 86 in. wide machine and a 543 lb. footprint.

It is not the right buy if your ceiling is under about 90 in., if the room cannot take a machine this wide, or if you want a free bar path. A Smith machine fixes the bar in one plane by design. That is the safety feature, and it is also the limit.

What comes with it?

  • SCB1000B frame, vertical carriage, and counterbalanced Olympic bar
  • Six Olympic plate storage posts
  • Assembly hardware and the owner's manual

Olympic plates, collars, and a bench are sold separately. This machine is sold in one configuration. There are no options to select and no bolt on attachments, so there is nothing else to configure at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

What does the bar weigh on the SCB1000B?
About 6 lb. of starting resistance. The bar itself is a full size Olympic bar, but the counterbalance system carries most of its weight, so what your hands feel at the start of a set is roughly 6 lb.

What is a counter-balanced Smith machine?
It is a Smith machine with weights and cables that offset the bar's own mass. Without counterbalancing, the empty bar is your minimum load. With it, the minimum drops to a few pounds, which is what makes the machine usable for beginners and for rehab work.

What happened to the SCB1000? Is the SCB1000B the same machine?
Yes. Body-Solid renamed the SCB1000 to SCB1000B and moved it to an all black finish. The features, the specifications, and the UPC did not change. If you already own an SCB1000, the parts and documentation still line up.

How much weight can it hold?
1,000 lb. That is the rating Body-Solid publishes for the carriage and frame. Body-Solid does not publish a separate maximum user weight for this model.

How much room does the SCB1000B need?
The machine is 50 in. deep, 86 in. wide, and 84 in. tall. Plan on about 8 ft. of ceiling and roughly 3 ft. of clear space behind and to each side, so a lifter can load plates and step out safely.

Does it come with weight plates or a bench?
No. Plates, collars, and a bench are all sold separately. Most buyers pair it with an adjustable flat, incline, and decline bench so the station covers bench press, incline press, and shoulder press.

Is it rated for a commercial gym floor?
Yes. It carries Body-Solid's full commercial rating, which means it is warranted for use in a paid membership facility, not just a home. The full terms are in the Warranty tab on this page.

How long does assembly take?
Plan on four to six hours with two people. The uprights are heavy and awkward, and the guide rods have to be aligned before the carriage will run smoothly. Details are in the Specs and Logistics tab.

Purchase benefits

  • Free freight shipping, curbside with liftgate included
  • Body-Solid full commercial warranty. The complete terms are in the Warranty tab on this page
  • No sales tax outside Maryland
  • Purchase orders accepted from schools, municipalities, and teams

Bottom line: The SCB1000B earns its place on a commercial floor because one station handles both ends of your membership. A 6 lb. starting bar lets a beginner train safely, a 1,000 lb. rating lets your strongest member train hard, and an oval 11 gauge frame on bearings holds up to both.

Common questions

Does it arrive assembled?

Most equipment arrives partly assembled and needs some setup. How much varies by product, and the Specs & Logistics section on this page lists the requirement for this model.

Will the truck bring it inside?

No. Freight delivery is curbside only. Liftgate service is included, so the item comes off the truck safely, but someone needs to be there to receive it, sign for it, and move it from the curb. Measure your doorways and the path to the room before you order.

Can I pay with a purchase order?

Yes. We work with clinics, schools and municipalities on purchase orders. Here is how it works.

What if it arrives damaged?

Note the damage on the delivery receipt before you sign, then contact us. Orders ship insured and carry the manufacturer's warranty, so a damaged or defective item gets repaired or replaced.

How do I know it fits my space?

Check the Specs & Logistics section for assembled dimensions and the clearance to allow around the unit. Measure the room, the doorways, and the route from the curb before you order.
