CrossFit Box Equipment: 8 Pieces to Outfit the Floor
Outfitting a box looks simple from the outside, and it is not. The buying math is different from a standard gym because everybody trains at the same time.
A commercial floor built for open training can get away with one of most things, since members arrive across the whole day. A class format floor cannot, because twenty people walk in together and start together.

What follows is eight pieces of equipment that cover a class based training floor, plus the station math that tells you how many of each to buy.
Athletes Per Station: Why a Box Buys in Multiples and a Gym Does Not
The question that decides your order quantity is not which rower is best. It is how many athletes have to move through one workout inside one class hour.
Here is the calculation we use when we sketch a class format floor. Every input below is an assumption we are stating out loud, not a measured figure.
The formula, in plain text:
- Heats needed = class size divided by number of stations, rounded up to a whole number
- Floor time needed = heats needed multiplied by round length
- The schedule works only if floor time needed is less than or equal to the working block
- Solved the other way: stations required = class size divided by (working block divided by round length), rounded up
The assumptions, named:
- Class length is 60 minutes. Assumption. A common class slot length, chosen here as a round number.
- Working block is 40 minutes. Assumption. The remaining 20 minutes are set aside for briefing, warm up, transitions, and cool down.
- Round length is 10 minutes. Assumption. That is the scored piece plus the reset before the next group starts.
- Class size is 24 athletes. Assumption. A planning figure for a busy evening slot, not an attendance record.
- One athlete per station, one movement at a time. Assumption. Everybody is on the same piece of equipment during that block.
These are WorkoutHealthy planning inputs. They are not measured data from any facility, and they are not an industry standard of any kind.
The worked example:
- Working block divided by round length: 40 minutes divided by 10 minutes equals 4 heats available
- Stations required: 24 athletes divided by 4 heats equals 6 stations
- Check it backward: 24 athletes across 6 stations equals 4 heats, and 4 heats times 10 minutes equals 40 minutes, which fills the working block exactly
So a class of 24 needs six of whatever the workout is built around, not one good one. Three rowers would force 8 heats and 80 minutes of floor time, which does not fit a 60 minute class.
I would rather buy six honest stations than one impressive machine that only a quarter of the class ever touches. In a class format, the piece nobody can get to on time may as well not be on the floor.
Change one input and the answer moves, sometimes sharply. That sensitivity is the useful part of the exercise.
Raise class size to 30 and the requirement goes to 30 divided by 4, which rounds up to 8 stations. Two extra athletes on the roster can cost you two more rowers.
Stretch the round to a 20 minute metcon and only 2 heats fit the block, so 24 divided by 2 gives 12 stations. Long pieces are expensive in equipment, not just in time.
Run it as a partner workout where two athletes share one station and the requirement roughly halves, so six stations becomes three. That is the cheapest lever on the list, and it is programming rather than purchasing.

1. A rig with enough stations
The rig is the spine of a class format floor. It is also the single cheapest way to buy station count, because one structure delivers pull up bars, ring anchors, squat stations, and storage in the same footprint.
Rigs are commonly configured with something in the range of 10 to 20 working stations. Run that through the math above and a rig alone can often carry a full class through a pull up or squat block without a second heat.
Buying separate pieces to reach the same station count costs more and eats more floor. That is the honest argument for the rig, and it holds up better than any claim about how it looks.

My view is that the rig earns its keep on station count, not on appearance. Buy the number of working positions your class needs, then stop.
Specify the rig for what actually gets programmed. Extra attachments that never appear in a workout are floor space you paid for twice.
2. Rowing machines, in quantity
Rowing sprints show up constantly in functional class programming because the stroke loads the legs, back, and arms in one movement. That makes the rower a workout wide station rather than an accessory.
Members expect rowers in a facility like this. What separates a good floor from an average one is having enough of them that nobody sits out a heat.
Commercial grade rowers are built for continuous group use, with heavier frames, better seat rollers, and monitors that survive daily abuse. That construction is the reason they last under class loading.
Apply the station math directly here. Rowers are the piece most likely to become the bottleneck that decides your class capacity.
3. Gymnastic rings
Rings are the core tool for suspended bodyweight work, and they carry a large share of the upper body pulling and pressing volume in this training style. They are also inexpensive relative to what they add.
Most rigs include at least one overhead position built for hanging rings, and larger rigs include several. In most cases you will not need a separate frame at all.
An A frame is still worth considering if your rig positions are already spoken for during a workout. It buys ring stations without buying another rig.
Whatever route you take, plan for more than one athlete on rings at a time. A single ring station turns a class block into a queue.
4. Olympic bumper plates
Bumper plates exist because loaded barbells get dropped from overhead in this style of training. Plates that are not built for that will damage your floor, your walls, and themselves.
Steel plates and traditional tri grip plates are not designed to be dropped repeatedly. Used that way they become a consumable, and replacing them repeatedly costs more than buying correctly once.
Bumper plates use a dense rubber body and a steel insert, with a smooth round profile that absorbs a drop and rolls predictably. That is the whole design brief.
Buy them in matched pairs and enough sets to load every barbell on the floor at once. Sharing plates between stations quietly turns your six station plan back into a three station plan.

5. The best Olympic bars you can justify
Barbell work sits at the center of the programming, so every athlete in the room touches your bars. High turnover and repeated drops are the normal operating condition, not the exception.
A bar rated for a given load is not automatically a bar built to be dropped from a jerk. Whip, sleeve construction, and bearing or bushing quality all matter more under this use than a static rating does.
Buy bars specified for Olympic lifting and repeated drops, and buy enough of them that the barbell block runs in one heat. A competition specification bar is the safer default for a shared floor.
Mixed quality bars across a rack cause a second problem. Athletes start queueing for the two good ones, which breaks the heat schedule you planned around.
6. A kettlebell set with real range
Kettlebells cover swings, cleans, snatches, presses, and carries in one implement, which makes them efficient in both cost and floor space. They fit the way this training moves between strength and conditioning without a station change.
The common mistake is treating kettlebells as a token addition. A set that stops at a light top weight serves beginners and nothing else.
Plan the top end for your strongest members, not your average one. A top weight around 40 kg, roughly 88 lb, is a reasonable ceiling for a general class floor, and heavier is better if the programming calls for it.
Watch the increments as much as the range. If the jumps between sizes are large, you will need duplicate sets so a class of 24 is not fighting over one usable weight.
Choose cast iron or solid steel construction. Vinyl coated bells crack under repeated floor contact and become a replacement cost you did not budget for.
7. Plyo boxes, plural
Box jumps and step ups appear in this programming constantly, which puts plyo boxes in the same bulk buy category as rowers. One or two boxes will not carry a full class through a jumping block.
The better sets offer several working heights so a novice and an experienced athlete can train the same movement side by side. That range matters more than the material.
Avoid anything with a smooth, unsecured base. Purpose built boxes use rubber feet or grips that keep the box planted when an athlete lands short.
Run the station math here too. Jumping blocks tend to be short, which means fewer heats fit the working block and the required box count climbs.
8. A prowler sled
Sled pushes and pulls build power, leg strength, and conditioning at once, with almost no technical barrier for a new member. That combination makes the sled one of the highest value pieces on a functional floor.
The requirements are simple: a suitable surface such as turf, and enough track length to make a push meaningful. Beyond that a sled needs no power, no maintenance schedule, and no calibration.
Load is added with standard weight plates, so a sled scales from a beginner to an advanced athlete without buying anything extra. It can be pushed, pulled with a rope, or dragged with a harness.
Budget for a dedicated set of plates for the sled. Pulling plates off the rig to load a sled mid class is the kind of small friction that wrecks a heat schedule.
Putting the eight together
Start with the rig, since it delivers the most stations per dollar of floor space. Then size the rowers, plyo boxes, bars, and plates against your realistic class size rather than your average one.
Run the station calculation before you place the order, not after the first crowded evening class. Buying quantity is the decision that actually determines whether your programming works on the floor.
