Gym Plate Calculator
Find a simple plate layout for each side of a barbell or plate loaded machine.
Enter target total and the bar or machine starting weight. Choose pounds or kilograms.
Calculator
Enter your numbers, then select Calculate.
How the calculator works
The calculator subtracts starting weight, divides the remainder between two sides, and selects the largest standard plates first.
How to use the result
Use the result as a consistent planning number. Record the inputs with the answer so a later comparison uses the same method.
Recalculate when the underlying inputs change. Avoid comparing results created with different units, measurement methods, or machine settings.
What the result does not include
The result assumes unlimited matching plates and does not know what your gym owns. It also does not account for collars unless their weight is included in the starting weight.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for a Smith machine?
Yes. Enter the machine starting resistance in the bar weight field when it is known.
Why is there an unmatched remainder?
The target cannot be built exactly from the available standard plate sizes.
